New Bed

New Bed, originally uploaded by scootersbabygirl.

Since we’ve been together, Scott and I have slept on a full sized bed. Almost everybody we’ve known has commented on that fact and has asked why we didn’t get a queen sized bed. This year we actually got a tax return, and we decided that it was time to get something bigger.

When I started looking into the price for queen sized beds, I was curious how much size we’d gain from getting a queen sized bed. The difference between a full and a queen? Six inches. SIX. That was it. We’d pay close to $1,000 for a new frame and mattress for six friggin inches. Um, no, thank you. So we decided if we were going to buy a new bed, our first NEW bed ever, we might as well go for a king-sized bed!

After much searching we found a company that we both liked. We looked at a few other companies and showrooms and had gotten a few different prices.

Then we went to a “discount mattress store” that I’d found online. It was hidden away in a small area in a large city that’s about 1 1/2 hrs away from us. We went to the city to have fun with the kids at an indoor arcade area, but we wound up getting a king sized bed and a whole new frame for a steal.

Then the question became: how do we get the damn bed home? No problem! The woman said. You simply have to put the box for the bed in the mini-van and strap the mattress on the top. This, of course, was all said with a charming Brazillian accent (I think Scott was hot for the woman).

So he went down the road to the hardware store, got some great straps, and we hooked the thing up. We headed down the road, grabbed some grub for the munchkins (it was far later than we’d anticipated it being), and we stopped at a store to grab some king sheets, since, ya know, we didn’t have any.

We made it about 30 minutes out of the city, with me watching the mattress the entire time. One minute it was on the top of the van, the next? BAM! It went flying off and into the road. And, of course, we had about 20 cars behind us because Scott, for the first time in his life, was actually driving slow.

We dragged the mattress over to the side of the road to a little pull-off and maneuvered the van there. I was frustrated. How were we going to get the mattress home?

Suddenly a truck pulled up to us.

“Hey – can I give ya a hand?”

This amazing guy, and his wife and their 13 year old son, loaded up our mattress in their truck, strapped it down, and followed us all the way home, which was about a half an hour out of their way.

We tried to pay them gas money, but the husband and wife wouldn’t take it. Scott eventually put some money into the hands of the 13 year old and asked him to make sure his dad got the money.

There have been a few times in the last six months when people have just done extremely nice things for us without asking for anything back. We always try to do the same – it’s just a nice way to be.

I am so extremely grateful for the guy and his family who took the time to stop and to help, and I hope that we have the chance to pay it forward in a similar way very soon.

And the new bed? We got it together this afternoon, and I absolutely can’t wait to sleep on it!! It’s HUGE!! You could swim in the dang thing!

That made me smile. Sometimes I lose all faith in humanity and then I hear a story like this and it’s restored again. 🙂

Rhonda – it was a very sweet thing for them to do, that’s for sure.

Briana – I can’t wait to sleep in the king-sized bed!

Jenera – I know!! I’m still so happy about the bed and so thankful for the people who stopped.

Sherry – I know, when you read such negativity and bad things happening on blogs, it’s hard not to lose faith in humanity.
